Oneonta YMCA Aquatics Water Safety The Oneonta Family YMCA strives to perform at the highest level by providing a safe and professional aquatics program. We are the areas largest and best Red Cross Lifeguard training facility. Our Lifeguard Training instructors work throughout the year to train waterfront and pool lifeguards. We understand what it takes to keep our swimmers safe, and pride ourselves on running a professional and safe facility. To ensure swimmer safety we maintain a trained and professional lifeguard on duty at all times in our swimming pools. All of our lifeguards are Red Cross Certified and complete in-service training and regular updates to their lifeguard certifications. We only hire lifeguards who come to us with strong references and a sincere understanding of the importance of their job. We impose a ratio of no more than 20 swimmers for every one lifeguard. In order to maintain a safe swimming pool for our patrons we swim test all new youth swimmers before allowing them to swim in the deep end of the pool. For all camp and youth group swim programs we test and document the children who may swim in deep water. Once a swimmer passes the deep water test they then wear a colored wristband for the duration of the swim. In addition to our safety procedures on site, we subscribe to the following procedures while off site: Y Camp and Youth Program Procedures 1. We bring our own lifeguard staff to supplement the staff at water parks and lakes. 2. We always bring additional staff to water fieldtrips including our Camp Director and senior staff to ensure that safety procedures are followed. 3. We use a buddy system and create small chaperoned groups. 4. Campers wear colored shirts and wristbands to identify their level and program. 5. We provide 1 lifeguard for every 20 children, plus 5 additional camp staff to assist in the pool area with bathroom breaks, and other tasks and procedures that are necessary to maintain a safe and well organized swim experience.
