Building Strong Families, One Generation at a Time

Watch the Niebanck Story Here

At the Oneonta Family YMCA, we often say we're more than a gym—we're a community where strong families are built. There may be no better example of that than the Niebanck family.

Twenty-one years ago, when Adam Niebanck accepted a position in Oneonta, one of the smartest first decisions he made was to join the Oneonta Family YMCA. Little did he know that decision would become part of a family tradition spanning generations.

If you've spent any time at the Y, you've probably met Shirley Niebanck. On Monday, August 3, Shirley celebrates her 91st birthday, and she's still one of our most energetic and inspiring members. You can find her almost every day riding the spin bikes, in water aerobics, playing pickleball, or working hard in Anna's Strong Body, Strong Heart class. Her enthusiasm is contagious, and she reminds us all that healthy living has no age limit.

Shirley's commitment inspired her daughter-in-law, Paula, who is now a familiar face alongside her in many of those same classes and activities.

The family legacy didn't stop there. Shirley's granddaughter, Elizabeth, has been part of the YMCA since she was a teenager. She stayed active throughout both of her pregnancies, and today she's introducing the next generation to healthy habits by bringing her own children to the YMCA. It's a beautiful reminder that wellness isn't just something we practice—it's something we pass on.

And then there's Milo, the Shirley's dog, who occasionally visits as our unofficial—and only—dog intern. He always manages to brighten someone's day!

Even Shirley's son, who now lives out of State, makes the YMCA one of his first stops whenever he's back in Oneonta.

The Niebanck family reminds us that the YMCA isn't just a place to exercise. It's where friendships are formed, healthy habits take root, and family traditions are created. From a child's first swim lesson to active older adults celebrating their 91st birthday, the YMCA is here for every stage of life.

From birth to the golden years, the YMCA has something for everyone.

Thank you, Niebanck family, for reminding us what it means to build a legacy of health, connection, and community. We are honored to be part of your family's story—and grateful that you're such an important part of ours.
