At the Oneonta Family YMCA, Matt O’Thuse is one of those team members who helps keep everything running smoothly behind the scenes while also creating a welcoming experience for members every day.

Matt works at the Welcome Center at both facilities, where he enjoys connecting with members and meeting new people. He also helps maintain the cleanliness of the facilities, making sure members have a safe, comfortable environment to enjoy. In addition, Matt serves on the Presidium Team, which focuses on helping keep everyone safe within the YMCA facilities and supporting the Y’s commitment to member safety and well-being.

One of Matt’s favorite things about working at the Y is watching kids grow up through the programs and seeing familiar faces become part of the community over the years. For him, the Y is more than a gym — it’s a place where people grow, connect, and support each other.

Outside of work, Matt loves staying active through disc golf, snowboarding, hiking, and spending time outdoors doing “naturey stuff.” If he could have any superpower, it would definitely be flying — and not just to save on gas. Although, having super strength wouldn’t be too bad either.

When it comes to snacks, Matt keeps it simple: cold pizza. He proudly admits he can absolutely “mow on some pizza.”

Matt’s advice to anyone thinking about beginning their fitness journey is both encouraging and relatable:
“Life is all about balance, its and ebb and flow. Maybe you’ve been ebbing for a while — now it’s time to get back into the flow of things. I don’t care what facility you join, just start your fitness journey and start flowing again.”

We’re grateful for Matt’s positive energy, dedication, and the many ways he helps make the YMCA a welcoming and safe place for our community every day.
