In 2014 the Oneonta Family YMCA was contracted to operate the City of Oneonta Parks and Aquatics recreation programs in order to ensure continuing services to the City residents. The Oneonta Family YMCA implemented 2 NY State registered parks programs, Neahwa Park Adventure (9 am-noon) and Wilber Park Discovery (1:30-4 pm) programs, in order to provide a variety of fun outdoor activities for our youth. Swimming lessons were also offered in addition to the daily operation of Briggs Pool in Wilber Park. In 2015, the need for day long childcare prompted the Oneonta Y to enhance the programs by offering a YMCA Lunch Bunch program that bridged the 2 programs together by supervising children to attend the Catholic Charities’ free lunch program and then join the afternoon program. A Monday/Friday YMCA program was also added to allow 5 days of childcare. In addition, the renovation of the Briggs Pool bath house, which was obtained by the City of Oneonta via a grant, further enhanced the pool experience by all 8,752 patrons who visited the outdoor pool!
Now in its 3rd summer of collaborating with the City of Oneonta, the Oneonta Family YMCA is gearing towards the BEST.SUMMER.EVER. Registration for city residents took place last week and we have had record turnouts on the number of City children being enrolled into the programs. Based on the numbers so far, it is predicted that all programs will be filled much sooner than prior years, and is a true testament that summer programming is a huge need in this community. Registration for non-residents opens May 17 at the Y from 5-8 p.m. and on May 21 from 10 a.m. - noon. The Oneonta Family YMCA is proud to be a part of this collaboration and continues its commitment of building strong kids, strong families and strong communities.
